The arrest warrant against the former Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (Ministry of Industry), Baek Woon-gyu (56), who is accused of engaging in the operation of the economic feasibility evaluation of Wolseong nuclear power plant No. 1 was dismissed.

On the 9th, Deputy Chief Judge Oh Se-yong, who was in charge of the warrant of the Daejeon District Law, dismissed the prior arrest warrant requested by the prosecution against the prosecution on charges of interfering with the exercise of the rights of ex officio abuse and obstructing business.

Judge Oh, who conducted an interrogation of the suspect before arrest for 6 hours (substantial warrant examination), said, “It is difficult to conclude that the suspect is concerned about destruction of evidence because the important reference person has already been detained and the statements of the relevant people have been secured.” He declared that there is room for contention, so it is necessary to ensure that the suspects can exercise their defense rights in the disabled state.”

After the questioning, former Minister Baek, who had been waiting at Daejeon Prison for about three hours, returned home in accordance with the court’s decision to dismiss the warrant. He met with reporters and argued, “Early closing of Wolsong Unit 1 was a national task established with the highest priority for the safety of the people. Even when I implemented the policy for the reappointment of the Minister, I did the work appropriately based on national principles.” He previously denied the allegations that he had “worked in due process according to laws and principles” even before the suspect’s interrogation.

Accordingly, a prosecution official said, “It is difficult to understand the reasons for dismissing the warrant, but we will investigate more thoroughly.” However, the prosecution’s investigation into the suspicion of the 1st Wolseong nuclear power plant was put to a standstill.

Previously, the Daejeon District Prosecutor’s Office (Prosecutor Sang-Hyeon Lee) investigating the suspicion of manipulating the economic feasibility of the Wolseong nuclear power plant unit 5 was suspected of unfairly involved in the economic evaluation of the Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) at the time prior to the closure of the Wolseong nuclear power plant on the 4th. KHNP, who operates the Wolseong nuclear power plant, has requested a preliminary arrest warrant for Baek on charges of interfering with its legitimate business.
