Overtaking Kimchi and Bibimbap, Foreigners Thumbs Up for’Korean Chicken’

According to a survey, the most favorite Korean food of foreigners abroad is’Korean style chicken’. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced the results of the ‘2020 Overseas Korean Food Consumer Survey’. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, 13.3% of foreigners who responded to the survey last year cited Korean-style chicken as their favorite Korean food. Kimchi (11.9%) took second place, and bibimbap (10.3%) took third place.

In particular, among foreigners who have eaten Korean food, 33.6% said they enjoyed kimchi. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food said, “It seems that the number of people eating kimchi has increased as interest in health has increased due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).”

The survey was conducted online by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, with 8,000 foreigners in 16 major cities around the world, including Beijing (China), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Rome (Italy) from August to September last year. As for Korean food that foreigners do not prefer, Korean alcohol (14.1%) was the most popular. Not a few foreigners (9.5%) said they didn’t like kimchi.

Bulgogi (12.8%) was the most popular Korean food in North and Central America. Europeans liked bibimbap (12.6%) the most. In Northeast Asia, they preferred grilled pork belly (11.6%), and in Southeast Asia, kimchi (14.9%).

In this survey, more than half (57.4%) of foreigners answered that they “know Korean food”. Among them, 81.3% said they were “satisfied” with Korean food. Kim Jong-gu, director of food industry policy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, said, “We will establish and support national strategies to improve the satisfaction of Korean food and Korean restaurants (overseas).”
