‘One-stop support for secondary battery technology development’… 23 billion won test and evaluation center

[이데일리 문승관 기자] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 3rd that it will build a’secondary battery material parts test and evaluation center’ with a total of 23 billion won by 2023 to support the technology development of domestic small and medium-sized companies that produce medium and large secondary battery material parts.

In this test and evaluation center, you can receive not only analysis of core materials and major parts of secondary batteries developed by domestic small and medium-sized companies, but also evaluation of cell performance by making them with medium and large-sized battery cells that are used in actual electric vehicles. . Core materials such as cathode materials, anode materials, separators, electrolytes, (parts) lead tabs, current collectors, pouches, etc., are manufactured into cells, and evaluation results feedback, error analysis, and other consulting services are provided to provide comprehensive support to improve technical completion. It also performs functions of nurturing secondary battery specialists, such as operating a practice platform using cell manufacturing facilities and test and evaluation equipment.

In Korea, there is only a test and evaluation infrastructure for small-sized batteries used in mobile phones, and there is a very lack of specialized manufacturing and evaluation infrastructure for testing medium and large batteries used in electric vehicles and ESS. In order to confirm the final performance when a battery is made from newly developed materials, a material/parts company without battery cell production facilities should request a performance evaluation from a battery manufacturer. Because this process takes a lot of time and cost, the difficulties faced by material parts development companies were great.

By establishing a material parts test and evaluation center through this project, small and medium-sized companies that develop material parts will be able to shorten the performance evaluation cost and period, and it is expected that there will be more opportunities to apply and test battery cells from the early stages of development. Battery manufacturers can receive reliable evaluation results for various material parts while using the cell manufacturing facility to concentrate on the production of the battery, which is the original purpose.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “In order for secondary batteries to leap into a new major industry, securing the basic technology competitiveness of materials and parts is of paramount importance.” Said.
