A study found that when infected with a novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19, Corona 19), 1 in 3 people were analyzed to have been diagnosed with mental health disorders or cranial nerve disorders within 6 months of infection. It is a study that analyzed the large-scale electronic medical records of 23,379 confirmed corona19 in the United States. It is pointed out that attention should be paid not only to vaccines or patient treatments to suppress the spread of Corona 19, but also to health care issues that appear after infection, such as mental health and neurological diseases.

Researchers at Oxford University in the UK analyzed the electronic medical records of large-scale patients infected with Corona 19 in the United States and published the results of the study on the 6th of the international academic journal in the field of medicine,’Lancet Psychiatry’.

Research has shown that if you are infected with Corona 19, diagnosis of cranial and nervous system diseases is at high risk of receiving a diagnosis of mental health diseases. Studies have also shown that the risk of anxiety and emotional disorders increases during the first three months after infection. However, this is the first study to derive large-scale research data examining the risk of neurological and psychiatric diagnosis in the first six months after COVID-19 infection.

The researchers analyzed 14 cranial and nervous system and mental health diagnosis records and symptoms that occurred within 6 months of infection in 23,6379 patients infected with Corona 19. The subject of analysis is 10 years of age or older, infected with Corona 19 after January 20, 2020, and survived until December 13, 2020. The researchers compared and analyzed data from 10,5579 influenza patients and 23,6038 patients with other respiratory infections to compare them with other infectious diseases.

As a result of the analysis, the proportion of patients diagnosed with cranial nervous system or mental health disorders after infection with Corona 19 is 34%, which is 1 in 3. Of these, 13% were the first to receive a diagnosis related to brain, nervous system and mental health. The most common diagnosis was anxiety, accounting for 17%. 14% had emotional disorders, 7% had substance abuse disorders, and 5% had insomnia. Those diagnosed with neurological disorders were cerebral hemorrhage (0.6%), ischemic stroke (2.1%), and dementia (0.7%).

The rates of diagnosis of cranial nervous system and mental health disorders differed depending on the presence or absence of hospitalization and admission to the intensive care unit among corona19 patients to be analyzed. Of the total subjects, only 34% were diagnosed with cranial nervous system and mental health disorders, but 38% were hospitalized and 46% were admitted to the intensive care unit.

The researchers also analyzed data compared to patients with influenza and other respiratory infections during the same period. As a result of comparing basic information such as age, sex, race, and underlying disease, patients infected with COVID-19 had a 44% higher risk of cranial, nervous system and mental health diagnosis than those infected with influenza.

Those infected with Corona 19 had a 16% higher risk of receiving a cranial, nervous system and mental health diagnosis than those with respiratory infections other than influenza. In conclusion, corona 19 infection is at greater risk of cranial, nervous system and mental health disorders than influenza or other respiratory infections.

Paul Harrison, a professor at Oxford University in the UK, who conducted the study, said, “This data is actual data for large-scale confirmed patients.” It has also been shown to cause serious symptoms.” “Given the scale of the infectious disease spread, it could have a significant impact on health and social welfare systems across the entire population,” Harrison said.

Max Target, a researcher at Oxford University who conducted the study, said, “After Corona 19 infection, brain diseases and mental disorders are more common than other respiratory infections.” said.

However, there are limitations of this study. The researchers revealed that the limitations of this study are the accuracy problems of the electronic medical record data and the fact that patients with mild or asymptomatic symptoms were excluded from the study.
