Norwegian health officials said on the 15th that a total of 29 deaths occurred among people aged 75 and over who received the first COVID-19 vaccination. Norwegian authorities added that three-quarters of these were over 80 years old.
The authorities said, “The only vaccine available in Norway until the 15th was the Pfizer Biontech vaccine, and all deaths were related to this vaccine.”
Authorities added, “All reported deaths were elderly with underlying disease, and the general population experienced expected side effects such as nausea and vomiting, fever, local reactions at the injection site, and exacerbation of the underlying disease.”
With the death toll, Norwegian health officials warned that the COVID-19 vaccine could be dangerous for older patients with chronic illnesses.
“Three-quarters of the 29 dead were over 80,” the authorities said. “Vaccination can be very dangerous for elderly patients who have known chronic disease for a long time.” The authorities added, “13 of the 29 dead were autopsied, and as a result of the autopsy, the vaccine could have had a serious impact on the elderly,” he added.
The Norwegian Institute for Public Health said, “For those who are weak, relatively minor side effects of the vaccine can have serious consequences. For those with a very short lifespan, the benefits of the vaccine may be insignificant or even poisonous.”
However, he added, it does not mean that young and healthy people should avoid vaccinations.
Pfizer and Bio&Tech said they are working with Norwegian regulatory authorities to investigate the cause of death. “The number of deaths to date is not surprising,” Pfizer said.
Norway has inoculated the Pfizer vaccine to 33,000 people, and selected medical staff and elderly nursing homes vulnerable to Corona 19 as priority candidates and vaccinated.
Experts say the Norwegian experience reminds us that the COVID-19 vaccine could be too dangerous for older, terminally ill patients.
