North Korean missile provocation… ROK-US cooperative currency “A major threat to stability in Northeast Asia”

In connection with North Korea’s recent short-range ballistic missile launch, the ROK-US security authorities made a cooperative call on the 27th and discussed countermeasures.

On the same day, according to the Ministry of National Defense, Cho Yong-geun, the Defense Ministry’s North Korean Policy Officer, and David Helby, Assistant Secretary for Indo-Pacific Security at the US Department of Defense, held a phone call. In the call, the two sides shared information on the North Korean missile launch on the 25th and discussed countermeasures.

In particular, the two sides expressed deep concern about the North Korean launch and stressed that “North Korea’s ballistic missile launch and nuclear weapons development program seriously threatens peace and stability beyond Northeast Asia.”

They then decided to refrain from provocative and threatening actions by North Korea and continue to cooperate to comply with international obligations. It also confirmed the importance of trilateral cooperation with Japan to effectively respond to North Korean threats.

North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles for the first time since the inauguration of the US administration in Hamju County, South Hamgyeong Province on the 25th. The launch of a ballistic missile capable of carrying a tactical nucleus is a violation of the UN Security Council resolution. The North Korean media reported on the 26th that “the Defense Science Academy has conducted a test launch of a new tactical guided missile (short-range ballistic missile),” and “a weapon system with an improved warhead weight of 2.5 tons.
