North Korea’s fiscal contribution to the UN this year was estimated to be $173,000.

On the 31st, the Free Asia Broadcasting Corporation (RFA) cited the ‘2021 UN Regular Budget Contribution Report’ recently released by the United Nations Contributions Committee, and reported that the contribution North Korea has to pay this year is $173,554 (about 190 million won).

This is equivalent to 0.006% of the total contribution of the UN regular budget of about $2,9553 million this year. This is a decrease of $11,522 compared to last year’s $185,076 North Korean contribution.

The UN contribution is an amount allocated to all member states to cover the budget of the United Nations, and is newly calculated every three years based on objective economic indicators such as national income and external debt of each member state.

North Korea’s share rate is the 132nd among 193 UN member states. It is on the same level as Cambodia, Congo, and South Sudan.

North Korea’s contributions, which remained at the rate of 0.03~0.05% until 1998, decreased sharply from 1999.
Between 2001 and 2006, it decreased to 0.009%. Since then, it was 0.005% from 2016, and rose to 0.006% in 2019.

The country with the most contributions to the United Nations this year was the United States, accounting for 22% ($69.73 million), followed by China (about 12%), Japan (about 8%), Germany (about 6%), and the UK (about 4%), followed by France (about 4%).

Meanwhile, Korea’s contribution this year is about $65.57 million (about 73.3 billion won), the 11th largest among all UN member states.
