It was found that North Korea had already paid the United Nations fiscal contribution of $173,554 (approximately 195.76 million won) in full this year.
The RFA reported on the 2nd that North Korea and Algeria became the 65th country to pay the UN contributions in full this year, citing data from the UN Contribution Committee’s 2021 UN Regular Budget Contribution Receipt.
UN spokesman Stefan Dujaric said, “North Korea paid its contributions fairly quickly this year, and we express our appreciation. It is very important for member states to pay the regular budget contributions, which are essential for the UN to function properly,” he said.
North Korea previously delayed payment of its contributions in 2019 and 2020 due to financial sanctions against North Korea by the United States and the United Nations Security Council, but paid them in full in November last year.
William Brown, a professor at Georgetown University in the United States, said, “Even if foreign currency reserves declined sharply due to border control due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), North Korea would not have wanted to weaken its position in the United Nations, such as delinquency of its contributions and deprivation of voting rights at the General Assembly. “He said.
If UN member states fail to pay their contributions for two years or more without unavoidable reasons, they lose their voting rights at the UN General Assembly in accordance with Article 19 of the Charter of the United Nations.
