North Korea protested against the EU’s human rights sanctions as a “political provocation.”
A spokesman for the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 23rd in a question-and-answer form with a reporter from the Chosun Central News Agency. They strongly condemned and rejected them through political provocation,” he argued.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized that “a certain human rights sanction system, which the EU calls the legal basis for this game, is an evil law devised to oppress countries that offend them, and is consistently rejected by the international community.” He then warned, “It is worth keeping in mind that if the EU ignores our repeated warnings and continues to cling to the futile anti-Republican’human rights’ schemes, it will not escape the disastrous consequences beyond our imagination.” At the end of last year, when the EU introduced new human rights sanctions, it was expected that the US and Western police officers who committed “extreme large-scale human rights violations” were expected to be in mind, but he argued that the new system turned out to be a political tool.
It seems that the intention is to reduce the human rights issue to a political issue by addressing the death of a black man, George Floyd, due to overrepression by white American police. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the EU’s human rights sanctions were a “copy version” of the United States, and “Why not call it the United States of America at all?”
On the 22nd (local time), the EU imposed human rights sanctions on 11 individuals and 4 organizations in 6 countries including China and Russia, including the North Korean National Security Award, Lee Young-gil and the Social Security Award of North Korea. In response, China invited the EU and British ambassadors, and Russia protested by declaring halting relations with the EU.
