No tritium spill? “Possibility of natural environment leakage”

The Nuclear Safety Committee responded to the National Assembly that there was no external leakage of tritium from the Wolseong nuclear power plant site. However, as a result of a regular inspection two years ago by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and Technology, a report that leaked radioactive materials such as tritium leaked into the natural environment was released, resulting in ripples.

Accordingly, there are criticisms that the Wonan Committee hastily responded to the National Assembly without conducting an objective and transparent investigation through the public-private investigation team, causing confusion.

The Chosun Ilbo was silent about the suspicion of the leakage of radioactive materials (tritium) from the ruling party and some environmental groups in the article’The Wonan Committee, the ghost story after a month’. The committee expressed its official opinion to the effect of’no problem with safety’ within one month.” According to the response data received by the People’s Power on the 15th, the paper said, “There have been no cases where radioactive materials have been detected in excess of the allowable limit at the limit of the Wolseong nuclear power plant until now.” Radioactive materials (gamma nuclides) due to damage were also not detected.”

In this report, the Korean National Security Council responded, “It was not an official opinion, but as confirmed by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and Technology so far, it was judged that there was no release of radioactive materials that exceeded the standard value outside the site beyond the management scope of Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant. ”He explained.

However, if you look at the responses submitted by the Won Ahn committee to the National Assembly, the contents of the responses without clear grounds appear. In response to the question that the suspicion of tritium leakage, which was raised 7 years ago, was not identified, the Won Ahn Committee responded, “Wolseong Unit 1 Containment Building Filtration and Exhaust Facility (CFVS) construction (‘12.6~’13.4) due to the installation of ground reinforcement piles. The possibility of damage to the order structure has been confirmed, and we are constantly checking whether there is leakage of radioactive materials related thereto, and as far as it has been confirmed, it is difficult to say that radioactive materials have been released into the external environment.”

Despite the decision to investigate tritium leakage and external environment leakage due to the unreasonable construction of the CFVS on Unit 1, he asserted that it is difficult to see that it was released to the external environment due to the breakage of the water film.

The fact that such a claim has no basis appears in the report of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and Technology, which directly inspects and supervises the safety of the Wolseong nuclear power plant. According to the ’26th Regular Inspection Report of Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1′(made in March 2020), obtained by Media Today on the 17th, the inspection team was damaged by the construction of the containment filter and exhaust system (CFVS) in June-August 2012 After that, it was pointed out that it was judged that the leaked water from the spent nuclear fuel storage tank could have leaked into the natural environment.

In addition, the inspection team said, “After use, due to deterioration of the resin tank (Spent Resin Tank) epoxy liner, leakage through floor drainage and walls is in progress, and there is a possibility that such leakage may affect the groundwater environment in the site. The establishment/implementation was requested for corrective action on site.”

In a report published only 11 months ago by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, an official inspection agency, leaked water (contaminated water with radioactive materials such as tritium) due to the breakdown of the shielding membrane may have leaked into the natural environment, so it is clearly stated that repairs are required, but the KNA leaked the external environment. They are saying that there is no possibility.

In this regard, Pohang MBC’s news on the evening of the 16th’“Wolseong nuclear power plant cracks and leaks confirmed”… KHNP’s Lie?’, “There was a facility called a wastewater storage tank in the nuclear power plant, and there was a crack in it, and water contaminated with radioactivity was leaking.”

Regarding this, Han Byung-seop, head of the Nuclear Safety Research Institute, said in Media Today and Tonghua on the 17th, “tritium has already been found outside the shielding membrane.” “The shielding is a boundary that can control radioactive materials. It is a natural environment because the outside of the water curtain is out of our control, and it makes no sense to say that it was not leaked to the outside.”

Director Han said, “The concentration of tritium was high in the groundwater, such as the monitoring well and the sentry well inside the site, and this also corresponds to the natural environment.” He pointed out that the answer is a hasty judgment and a foolish judgment.”
