When E-Land World detected an environmental hormone exceeding the standard in New Balance’s children’s backpacks, it decided to recall the entire product. According to E-Land World on the 21st, New Balance will stop selling pink products for children’s backpack’Starit Girl’ from the 17th to the 16th of April and recall all of them. This is because, in a safety investigation conducted by the National Institute of Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, a phthalate plasticizer above the standard value was detected in the heart decoration of the front pocket of the product. This product was released in two colors, pink and mint, but the chemical was not identified in the mint color product. So far, it is said that hundreds of these products have been sold.

Phthalates are mainly used as additives for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) because they soften plastics. It is classified as a type of endocrine disruptor (environmental hormone), and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety warns that long-term exposure to this substance has a harmful effect on liver, kidney and reproductive function. At the end of last year, a phthalate plasticizer component exceeding 612 times the standard was detected in Daiso’s baby bath, and all of them were recalled.

New Balance announced in a notice that “the material that the manufacturer owned was mixed in the process of producing pink children’s backpacks, so we rechecked the production process and took measures to prevent the same errors.” He added, “The product has been confirmed to have no abnormality in safety except for the relevant part through a test by an authorized agency, so we will award non-conforming materials for injury or exchange and refund to customers who wish.” He said, “We decided to take action by preemptively announcing the recall on our website and Instagram account as we were ahead of the new semester.”

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Technology and Standards plans to announce how much environmental hormones were detected in the product of E-Land World in the near future.
