The National Council of City and Provincial Council Chairpersons condemned the Japanese government’s decision to discharge contaminated water from nuclear power plants and urged it to withdraw.

On the afternoon of the 14th, the National Council of City and Provincial Council Chairpersons held the third extraordinary meeting in 2021 at the Maison Glad Jeju Hotel on the afternoon of the 14th and adopted a “a statement urging the Japanese government to withdraw the decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant at sea”.

In a statement, the Chairman’s Council insisted, “The Japanese government should withdraw the decision to release Fukushima contaminated water at sea.”

“The Japanese government must transparently disclose all information related to Fukushima contaminated water to the international community,” he said. “Accept verification by the international community, including related countries such as Korea.”

The Chairman’s Council said, “I can no longer trust the Japanese government’s announcement given the actions that the Japanese government has shown since the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident until recently. This decision threatens the marine environment and human life in neighboring countries, including Korea, and around the world. He criticized it as an anti-human rights, anti-humanitarian decision.”

He said, “If the Japanese government does not withdraw the decision and implements it, it has resolved to stop the domestic distribution of all Japanese aquatic products within the limits permitted by international and domestic laws.”

In addition to the adoption of the statement, the Chairman’s Council reviewed 16 agenda items, including the urge to enact and amend the law to complete the Green New Deal. The adopted agenda will be proposed to the National Assembly and related central ministries.

At the meeting, the National Police Officer Civil Service Officers Council also attended and delivered opinions on the promotion of the self-governing police system and the establishment of an independent self-governing police system.

On the other hand, the Chairman’s Council plans to complete the event on the 16th after a special lecture on’preparation for the revision of the Local Autonomy Act’ and a visit to Jeju 4 and 3 Peace Park on the 15th.
