Recently, controversy arose when a video of Chinese cabbage pickled in an unsanitary environment was released. The Chinese side explained that it was “not for export,” but those who complained of anxiety still remain.

Dr. Seo Hye-young of the World Kimchi Research Institute on the 18th said on the YTN radio on the 18th that the outside temperature doesn’t look low from the view of the worker undressing the top. It is easy to withdraw.

Dr. Seo explains that the quality of kimchi is generally degraded because of the fact that such cabbage has already been fermented to a large extent by microbes.

The problem is that it is difficult for consumers to easily distinguish kimchi from pickled cabbage in the video. Dr. Seo said, “If the seasoning is mixed, the condition of the pickled cabbage is not confirmed, so I think I can only know it by touching it or eating it with my hand.”

However, since the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety conducts detailed inspections at the import customs clearance stage, the possibility of importing kimchi manufactured in the problematic manner is small.

An official from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety explained, “As Dr. Seo said, it is possible to check whether the cabbage is pickled unsanitarily if the import inspector touches it with the hand, and it is possible to block imports of products with problems through close inspection such as E. coli and food poisoning bacteria.”

The official also said that 87 Chinese kimchi manufacturers were on-site from 2016 to 2019, and 8 of them were suspended from importing, but they also did not use the pickling method in the video. In addition, it was revealed that all kimchi imported from distribution were tested for safety in conjunction with consumer organizations last year.

He added, “With this incident, we added tests such as food poisoning bacteria and preservatives for pickled cabbage and kimchi made in China.”
