It was reported on the 28th that Lee Nak-yeon, representative of the Democratic Party, will serve as the chairman of the special committee for the promotion of Gadeok Island, which will be launched around the 3rd of next month. It is unusual for a party representative to lead a special committee within the party.

Representative Lee must resign from the party representative early next month to challenge the presidential election. After that, it plans to maintain the position of the special committee chairman. Active members of the National Assembly and members of the National Assembly, whose regional districts are Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, decided to participate in the special committee.

The construction of a new airport on Gadeok Island is considered an issue that can affect not only the 4/7 Busan mayoral by-election but also the next year’s presidential election. For Lee, who is from Honam and needs support from the Yeongnam region, it can be a leverage to strengthen the political base.

Representative Lee Nak-yeon posted a post on Facebook on the 27th, saying, “Expectations for Gadeokdo New Airport and Southeast Mega City have risen to the maximum,” and “I will do my best with the government to meet expectations.”

Spokesman Heo Young also emphasized at a briefing at the National Assembly, “The special law of Gadukdo Island is a national transformation strategy to achieve balanced development of the national territory of the Boo·Ul·Gyeong (Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam) megacity”. Responding to the criticism that the Democratic Party, who was opposed to the Four Rivers, is conducting civil engineering projects, Spokesman Huh explained, “There are wrong civil engineering projects, but there are projects that are essential for balanced development,” and “We will try to minimize environmental damage.” did.

On the other hand, the Gyeongsilryeon said, “Even the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which is the main ministry, is against the passage of the Gadeokdo special law. The airport construction should be carried out in a hundred years, but the political group is begging for votes without procedures, standards, and justification.” It was criticized as being forced by the National Assembly, which is a group of non-professionals, to sin in the future.
