It is pointed out that a Myanmarian domestic helper, who died in Singapore five years ago with a weight of 24 kg, suffered from violence and hunger by a woman who is a householder, was killed in the surrounding indifference.
According to the Daily Straits Times on the 26th, Myanmar housekeeper Piang Ngai Don (24 at the time of death) was examined by doctors twice before his death in 2016 due to the violence of a landlord. It turned out that he had two consultations with the employment agency that arranged for employment. But nobody noticed the pain she was going through.
According to a court document reported by the newspaper, during the last examination before his death, doctors identified bruises in both eyes and cheeks of Piang Ngai Don. It was also reported that both feet were slightly swollen. As this fact was revealed during the trial process, the theory of responsibility for doctors and job agencies arose.
It was also pointed out that Guyatiri, her husband, a police officer, and two tenants who lived in the house with her mother may have learned of the abuse of the landlord. When asked if action could be taken against the doctors or tenants who last examined the housekeeper, K. Shanmugam, the Minister of Home Affairs and Justice, took a cautious position that it is difficult to say anything because the court ruling in the case has not yet been made.
Human Resources Minister Josephine Theo said authorities are reviewing three areas to prevent the recurrence. Theo explained that “the device to protect foreign domestic helpers from abused employers, the reporting system of doctors, and the involvement of the community and related organizations are three areas.”
Gaiya Thiri, who was previously accused of 28 crimes, including negligence against Pian Ngai Don, admitted the charges at a decision trial on the 22nd. This made it possible to sentence to life imprisonment. According to court records, Gaiya Thiri and the policeman’s husband hired Piang Ngai Don, who was at the age of 23 in May 2015, as a housekeeper to care for their children. But Gayatiri has been violent against her almost every day since. Eventually, Piang Ngai Don died after being beaten for hours by her in July 2016, a little over a year after working.
It is known that Gaiyatiri opened the door to watch the housekeeper and allowed them to toilet and take a shower. Piang Ngai Don was able to sleep only 5 hours at night, and received only a small amount of meals, weighing only 24 kg at the time of death. This means that you have lost more than a third of your weight when you first entered the house. Minister Shanmugam explained that Guyatiri’s husband also faced multiple charges in connection with the case, and that police disciplinary action would be imposed regardless of the outcome of the trial.
