(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jae-eun Jang = CEO Elon Musk of Tesla, an American electric vehicle company, said that he had been thinking about selling Tesla to the telecommunications company Apple.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Musk said on Twitter on the 22nd (local time) that “I contacted Tim Cook (Apple CEO) to discuss the possibility of Apple’s acquisition of Tesla.”

Musk added that Cook declined to hold meetings on the Tesla merger.

It was not revealed when the intention to sell Tesla was communicated to Cook.

Tesla faced a funding crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2019 when it increased production of the Model 3.

Musk described Tesla’s grievances at the time, and said on Twitter last month that there was once a month before bankruptcy.

He tweeted about Tesla’s delisting proposal in 2018, but was also caught in a lawsuit after being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

By the third quarter of 2019, Tesla managed to overcome its grievances and succeeded in a reversal of continuous profits. Since then, the stock price has soared, and now Tesla is the world’s best automaker with a market capitalization of $640 billion (about 708 trillion won).

Musk’s remarks came after reports of Apple’s pursuit of launching a self-driving electric passenger car in 2024.

Musk commented on the report, “It’s weird if it’s true.”
