Filipino mother burns’corona unemployment’

A fire broke out in a residential area in Myeongryun-dong, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, killing three people and two injured, including a grandmother in their 70s and two grandchildren from a multicultural family.

On the 31st, according to the Wonju Police Department and the fire department, a fire broke out in a house in a densely concentrated area in Myeongryun-dong, Wonju, around 3:5 am on that day. A fire spread to nearby houses, killing three people, including Filipino A (73, female), 9-year-old and 7-year-old granddaughter and grandson. The mother of the deceased children, Ms. B (32, female) of Filipino nationality, suffered a first-degree burn on her face and hands, and was transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mr. A, who died, is Mr. B’s mother and came to Korea at the invitation of his daughter last year. According to the police, Mr. A’s family was sleeping in the same room at the time of the fire. When the fire broke out, daughter B made a request for rescue through the window, and a neighbor took him out with difficulty. Afterwards, the residents tried to rescue other families, but the house was already in flames.

In addition, a man in his 60s who lives in a nearby house was injured and is being treated at a hospital. On this day, the fire burned all two houses, and the two were extinguished in about an hour and 20 minutes after burning half of them. The area where the fire was ignited was ahead of redevelopment, and it was difficult for the fire department to extinguish the fire because it was difficult to enter the fire engine because about 20 houses were densely clustered.

The fire department, who was dispatched after receiving a report from a neighboring resident, extinguished the fire by connecting a lake to a fire hydrant when the fire truck could not enter. The police and the fire department believe that the fire started in the home of a man in his 60s who was injured by the fire, and will conduct a joint investigation with the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to investigate the exact cause of the fire.

An official from the fire department said, “It was difficult to enter the fire engine because it was a densely populated area and the road was very narrow.

According to the police, Mr. B, who is being treated at the hospital, has recently quit the plastic factory he was attending in the aftermath of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). Mr. B’s husband and father of the children who died are Korean and currently working in China.

An official from the Wonju Police Department said, “The mother of the children went to a plastic factory in Wonju until recently, but it was found that they lost their job and received unemployment benefits for about 3-4 months in the aftermath of Corona 19. I know it was not a situation.”
