Filipino mother burns’corona unemployment’

A fire broke out in a residential area in Myeongryun-dong, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, killing three people and two injured, including a grandmother in their 70s and two grandchildren from a multicultural family.

On the 31st, according to the Wonju Police Department and the fire department, a fire broke out in a house in a densely concentrated area in Myeongryun-dong, Wonju, around 3:5 am on that day. The fire spread to nearby houses, killing three people, including Filipino A (73, female), granddaughter (9), and grandson (7). B (32, female) from the Philippines, the mother of the children who died, suffered a first-degree burn on the face and hands, and was transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mr. A, who died, is Mr. B’s mother and came to Korea at the invitation of his daughter last year. According to the police, the house where Mr. A and others died had two rooms, a kitchen, and a living room, and Mr. A’s family were sleeping in the same room at the time of the fire. When the fire broke out, her daughter B had a difficult time going near the window to request rescue, and the neighbors dragged her out with a window at the waist level of an adult. Afterwards, the residents tried to rescue other families, but the house was already in flames.

In addition, C, 65, who lives in a nearby house, suffered second-degree burns on his face and legs and is receiving treatment at a hospital. Mr. C said to the police, “I’m using an oil stove at home, but when I woke up, there was a fire and it ran out.” On this day, the fire burned all two houses, and the two were extinguished in about an hour and 20 minutes after burning half of them. The burned area is a place that is about to be redeveloped and is a place where about 20 houses are densely gathered. Because of this, it was difficult to enter the fire engine, and firefighters had difficulty in extinguishing it.

The firefighters who were dispatched after receiving a report from the neighbors connected the lake to a fire hydrant on the ground to extinguish the fire when the fire truck could not enter. The police and fire department will conduct a joint investigation with the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to investigate the exact point of ignition and cause of the fire.

An official from the fire department said, “It was difficult to enter the fire engine because it was a densely populated area and the road was very narrow.” “The burnt houses are old houses, so only the skeleton remains or all of them have collapsed.”

According to the police, Mr. B, who is being treated at the hospital, has recently quit the plastic factory he was attending in the aftermath of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). Mr. B’s husband and father of the children who died were Koreans who left Korea on December 12 last year and worked in China for welding. After hearing the news of the accident, Mr. B’s husband is now taking steps to enter Korea.

An official from the Wonju Police Station said, “The mother of the children went to a plastic factory in Wonju until recently, but it was found that they lost their job and received unemployment benefits for about 3-4 months in the aftermath of Corona 19. I know it was a bad situation.”
