Chairman of the Sejong Institute Moon Jeong-in, who was President Moon Jae-in’s mentor on North Korea policy, was appointed as the first co-chair of the Gyeonggi International Peace Exchange Committee.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 12th that it has appointed Chairman Moon as co-chair of the Gyeonggi International Peace Exchange Committee, which will be launched next month. Chairman Moon will serve as co-chair with Lee Jae-gang, Vice Governor of Gyeonggi-do Peace. The appointment ceremony is scheduled to be held on the 22nd.

The Gyeonggi-do International Peace Exchange Committee is an organization that advises on international exchange policies for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula promoted by Gyeonggi Province at the level of local governments. It was established in January when the’Gyeonggi-do International Peace Exchange Support Ordinance’ was enacted and implemented. About 30 private experts in various fields related to peace exchange will join as advisory committee members.

Chairman Moon is an international politician who was involved in the construction of the theory on the Sunshine Policy in the Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun governments. He was also known as’President Moon’s North Korean Policy Mentor’, acting as a special assistant to the Unification Diplomacy and Security of President Moon Jae-in. On the 15th of last month, he took office as the chairman of the Sejong Institute in Seongnam City.
Lieutenant Governor Lee said that he visited Chairman Moon and asked him to become the first co-chairman.

Noh Joo-hee, head of the Gyeonggi International Peace Center, which is an organization dedicated to international peace exchanges in Gyeonggi-do, said, “Gyeonggi-do, facing North Korea, enlisted Chairman Moon to play a more active role in keeping with President Moon Jae-in’s peace initiative on the Korean Peninsula.”
It is said that Chairman Moon also accepted the chairmanship in order to strengthen the cooperative relationship with Gyeonggi Province and to make the Sejong Institute an international research organization.

In Gyeonggi-do, Chairman Moon is expected to play a major role in international exchange activities for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula in Gyeonggi-do, as Chairman Moon acts as a special assistant to the President’s Unification Diplomacy and Security.

However, some predict that Moon will serve as a mentor for Lee’s diplomatic and security policy following President Moon, with the presidential election a year or so ahead. There is also a saying that the recruitment is conscious of the kinship.
An official in Gyeonggi Province warned against expanding interpretation, saying, “We have recruited the right people for the peace policy of Gyeonggi-do, the largest border region between the two Koreas.”
