MLB players' union refuses to postpone the season... Normal start on April 2nd

The MLBPA refused to postpone the season proposed by the Secretariat of the American Professional Baseball Major League (MLB).

Accordingly, the major leagues of the 2021 season are scheduled to start on April 2 (hereinafter referred to as Korean time) as scheduled.

MLB said on the 2nd day’s website, “The players’ union rejected the plan to postpone the season we suggested.”

The day before, MLB proposed to the athletes union to postpone the start of the regular season in the 2021 season from April 2 to April 29 and reduce the number of regular season games from 162 games per team to 154 games.

He also said that even if eight games per team are reduced, the annual salary will be given 100%.

MLB explained that the plan to postpone or reduce the season was based on opinions of medical experts.

Delaying the season for about a month can reduce the risk of new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) and increase vaccination.

However, the athletes’ union said, “After the executives held meetings throughout the weekend, they decided to reject the MLB secretariat’s proposal.”

In addition, the athletes union pointed out that “in the MLB’s proposal, if the season is interrupted or canceled, the salaries of the players and the service time of becoming a free agent (FA) were not properly protected.

As the players’ union refused to postpone the season, pitchers and catchers gathered on the 18th of this month and fielders gathered on the 23rd of the same month as scheduled for Spring Camp.

MLB added, “The 2020 season was able to be played with tremendous efforts from MLB and each club official,” and added, “I will try to make the 2021 season safe and enjoyable.”
