Ministry of Science and ICT, spurring the creation of a base environment where anyone can challenge the development of artificial intelligence

(Nuri Ilbo) The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced that it will start a’high performance computing support’ that supports the development of new technologies and services by easily utilizing computing resources, the source of artificial intelligence (AI) competitiveness.

Artificial intelligence development is completed as a final service through the process of creating an artificial intelligence model (algorithm) through numerous iterative learning through data collection and processing.

Since large-scale computation is required in this process, securing computational resources for high-speed processing of large amounts of data determines the competitiveness of artificial intelligence development.

However, high-performance computing construction is expensive, and the use of computational resources in universities, start-ups, and research centers is a big burden.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT has expanded high-performance computing resources (30.6PF, 1,000) this year compared to the first year of application in ’19 (regular support 4PF, 200 companies/institutions) and ’20 (25.7PF, 883 companies/institutions). Companies and institutions) will be secured and provided to companies and institutions.

In the case of 2020, 883 small and medium-sized venture companies, research institutes, and universities were supported to reduce the AI technology development period by an average of 3.9 months and to reduce costs by an average of 5 million won per month.

In 2021, NAVER Cloud will be selected as a high-performance computing support business provider, and will be promoted as a support system all year round.

Selected users apply for only the required capacity, check the usage on a monthly basis, and adjust the computational capacity according to the usage performance.

Resources will be provided immediately from March to users who received applications at the end of 2020 (December 2020 to January 2021), and additional applications will be received from the AI hub portal from March 8, 2021 to support more users.

“We will create an environment where anyone with an innovative idea can easily and quickly develop artificial intelligence technology through the high-performance computing support project,” said Song Kyung-hee, an artificial intelligence-based policy officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT. “In the future, artificial intelligence of domestic companies and institutions will be created. “We will continue to promote policies to improve technology and create a competitive industrial ecosystem, thereby supporting the growth of the artificial intelligence industry.”
