The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has developed a recycling technology that can recycle urban waste as energy. Through the complex plant using this technology, it is possible to solve the environmental and energy problems caused by urban waste at once.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Agency for the Advancement of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Science and Technology announced on the 4th that they have developed a’urban resource recycling complex plant construction technology (urban resource recycling technology)’ that complexly treats various wastes generated in cities and recycles them as energy.

Urban resource recycling technology is the core technology of the Korean low-carbon city model for the transition to a distributed urban energy supply and demand system in a wide area.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that it has completed performance verification through trial operation, secured operational technology, and developed core facilities such as hydrothermal carbonization, drying, and incineration with domestic technology to advance the technology level.

In particular, from June 2016 to November 2020, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (R&D) research and development (R&D) carried out research on urban resource recycling technology, and 12 public institutions and enterprises including the Institute of Advanced Technology and GS E&C participated in the development. .

In the meantime, municipal waste has been treated individually at individual facilities according to its type. For this reason, the economy and energy efficiency are low, and in the area where the facility is installed, complaints have been continuously raised due to odor.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that through the development of urban resource recycling technology, various types of waste can be collected in one place and produced as energy through a complex plant, thus solving environmental and energy problems at once.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport installed a demonstration facility in the metropolitan landfill where three types of waste can be transported and utilized at the same time, and supplied thermal energy to the nearby Dream Park CC Club House. The demonstration period lasted from October to November last year for one month.

As a result of the demonstration, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that the annual energy cost savings of 330 million won and 30% treatment cost were saved compared to the cost of treating each of the three wastes.

In addition, the use of 22.6 tons of waste, such as 14 tons of daily household waste, 4.8 tons of food waste, and 3.8 tons of sewage waste generated by 7,000 households per day enables 550 households to become energy self-reliant and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 2466 tons per year. did.

Lee Sang-ju, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Technology Safety Policy Officer said, “In the future, basic environmental facilities will be able to be promoted in a safer and more efficient small-scale decentralized form using advanced technology. Unlike the past, which was considered an evasion facility, energy supply using underground spaces. It can be used as a facility, and the ground space can be used as a variety of convenience facilities.”
