The government will begin early development of core parts related to urban air transportation (UAM), the next-generation future market.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a meeting with the aviation manufacturing industry at LIG Nex1 Daejeon House on the 5th and announced the 3rd Basic Plan for Aviation Industry Development (2021-30). The plan is a 10-year statutory plan established to reasonably support and foster the aviation industry, and targets manufacturing industries such as aircraft development and production.

UAM is a method that utilizes unmanned taxis and drones that can solve urban traffic congestion. The Ministry of Industry decided to develop eco-friendly and high-efficiency core parts early through the 3rd plan on this day, and to prepare a system for standardization of gas and parts technology in preparation for commercialization of UAM. An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “We will support the evaluation and commercialization of developed items through the establishment of a flight test infrastructure. Through this, a new future food will be created in the domestic aviation manufacturing industry.” According to the industry, the scale of the UAM market, which has been noted as the future aviation sector, is expected to grow to about 1.5 trillion dollars in 2040.

In the plan to strengthen the competitiveness of the existing aviation market, the development of improved technology and the promotion of smart cabins to revitalize the export of developed finished machines (FA-50, Surion) were suggested. Smart Cabin is a business that focuses on reducing aircraft weight and cost by converting the existing wired terminal for passengers installed in the aircraft to short-range wireless communication (Wi-Fi).

The Ministry of Industry and Industry decided to overcome the industrial crisis caused by the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) and strengthen financial support for small and medium-sized aviation companies in order to maintain the foundation. More than% of them are small businesses with less than 5 billion won in capital.

These industries deliver 92% of civilian orders to Boeing and Airbus, and sales of more than half declined as parts production and maintenance of civil aircraft were hit by Corona 19. For this reason, about half of the 1,171 idle workers in the domestic aircraft industry are expected to be restructured by the end of this year.

To promote the basic plan strategy on this day, the Ministry of Industry allocated 115.3 billion won to 22 projects including support for aviation parts manufacturing companies (82.8 billion won) for this year’s aviation industry-related budget. Industry Minister Sung Yun-mo said at the event, “Recently in the global aviation market, a market of new opportunities such as UAM and various avionics software is opening up,” and “I will do my best to support policy.”
