Ministry of Industry, start of preliminary process for new industrial process… Accelerating carbon neutrality by increasing R&D investment

R&D investment for improving efficiency and advanced process management
Focus on fostering fossil fuel use reduction items

[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter Eun-Seok Lim = In order to realize carbon neutrality, the government and industry are expanding investment in industrial process R&D and promoting a preliminary feasibility study.

On the 9th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the ‘4th working-level meeting of the Carbon Neutral Industrial Transition Promotion Committee’ in which 13 industry associations, including Kim Young-joo, executive director of the Steel Association, attended. The working-level meeting was held for the purpose of discovering the urgent demand for carbon reduction R&D and other difficulties in the industry for the strategic allocation of the carbon reduction R&D budget.

The Ministry of Industry suggested the direction for promoting carbon reduction technology development and requested active participation from the industry. First of all, it was judged that the development of new industrial processes such as hydrogen reduction steel and electric heating naphtha decomposition process was inevitable in order to fundamentally reduce carbon emissions in industries that emit carbon, such as steel, petrochemical, cement, semiconductors, and displays. Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry, considering that large-scale R&D is necessary, is planning to start planning preliminary projects in earnest.

In order to achieve GHG reduction results within a short period of time, it is necessary to promote efficiency improvement and process management advancement technology development with a sense of speed. To this end, it plans to actively discover related tasks and invest as much as possible from 2022.

In industries such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and machinery that generate carbon in the process of use rather than the product production process, we plan to focus on fostering items directly connected to the reduction of fossil fuel use such as electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, and eco-friendly ships.

The Ministry of Industry evaluated that carbon-neutral technology development has been progressing mainly in energy fields such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and demand management, and investment in technology development related to the industry has been relatively low. Accordingly, in the future, it is planned to convert the industrial process GHG reduction technology support into a core technology development agenda in the industrial field.

In addition, among the tasks discovered through the conference, tasks with high urgency are scheduled to be assigned preferentially when preparing the next year’s budget.

“The process of converting industrial processes to carbon neutrality can be both a crisis and an opportunity for companies,” said Jang Young-jin, head of the industrial innovation department of the Ministry of Industry. It is expected to be a leading solution.”
