Ministry of Industry launches’Future Vehicle-Semiconductor Council’… … Confronting the automotive semiconductor crisis

[테크월드뉴스=서유덕 기자] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Industry) held an inauguration ceremony for the’Future Vehicle-Semiconductor Solidarity and Cooperation Council’ on the 4th.

The consultative body was recently set up to seek measures related to instability in supply and demand for global automotive semiconductors, and to discuss mid- to long-term cooperation measures to preoccupy the future vehicle and semiconductor market and stabilize the domestic supply chain. On that day, at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 14 o’clock, 10 public and private officials, including the head of the Industrial Policy Department of the Ministry of Industry, discussed the plan for cooperation between domestic automobile-semiconductor companies.

In the automotive semiconductor industry, ▲ process development-facility expansion-actual vehicle tests take several years, ▲ international standards such as ISO26262 or AEC-Q must be obtained ▲ There are technical difficulties. Therefore, it is necessary to establish regular cooperation channels to discuss cooperation plans between the automotive-semiconductor industry.

After the establishment of the consultative body, the government will take measures to resolve the short-term supply and demand shortage of automotive semiconductors and discover a cooperative model in the mid- to long-term. First of all, the government will help improve the supply and demand situation of automotive semiconductors by supporting rapid customs clearance and performance evaluation for automotive semiconductor components. It simplifies the customs process by minimizing documents and screening tests and allowing reports before arrival at the port, and promotes emergency support for performance evaluation using a budget of 40 billion won for this year’s mass production performance evaluation project.

In the mid- to long-term, we will discover a cooperative model that links automobile companies and semiconductor companies (foundry, fabless, etc.). This is part of a strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic vehicle semiconductor supply chain (value chain) by strengthening support for technology development, performance and certification, and building related infrastructure. The government has launched a new dedicated business from 2022 to support related R&D, such as the next-generation intelligent semiconductor technology development project and autonomous driving technology development innovation project to make vehicle semiconductors and parts self-sufficient, and to strengthen performance evaluation and commercialization support for final mass production. It is planning to create a new one.

Kang Kyung-sung, head of the industrial policy department of the Ministry of Industry, said, “We will make this crisis an opportunity to increase future car-semiconductor competitiveness in order to preoccupy the future mobility market.”
