The government discovered 10 items to strengthen and commercialize the domestic automotive semiconductor industry.

On the 7th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it held the second meeting of the’future car-semiconductor solidarity and cooperation council.’ At the meeting, the domestic vehicle semiconductor supply and demand trend and the government’s short-term support progress were reviewed, and concrete solidarity and cooperation plans between automobile-semiconductor companies were discussed.

The ten items discovered in the commercialization of automotive semiconductors are vehicle memory, power semiconductors, and semiconductors for driving image recording devices. Although it is not the microcontroller unit (MCU), which is the core cause of the recent supply and demand insecurity, the Ministry of Industry explained that it is necessary to become self-sufficient in order to strengthen the domestic automotive semiconductor industry capability and can be commercialized in a short period of time.

Items selected after additional demand surveys, project announcements (planned from April to May), and evaluation by the selection and evaluation committee will be given priority through the sub-manager mass production performance evaluation support project. 40 billion won will be invested by next year.

The Ministry of Industry explained that domestic companies are currently in discussions for mid- to long-term applications in fields such as an application processor (AP) for infotainment and image sensors, which are already equipped with capabilities. It is also planning to discover fields that have demand for development and internalization of finished vehicle companies, such as next-generation power semiconductors. In the areas of powertrain, chassis, safety, and autonomous driving, which have low self-reliance due to high development difficulty, we plan to gradually explore scenarios for building ecosystems.

The government announced in April that it will begin to establish a’mid- and long-term vehicle semiconductor technology development roadmap’ in April in order to promote the self-reliance of automotive semiconductors and accelerate cooperation between companies.

“We will do our best to promote industrial policies to strengthen domestic automotive semiconductor industry capabilities, including support for domestic vehicle semiconductor technology development, infrastructure construction, prototype production support, and reinforcement of investment support,” said Kang Kyung-sung, head of the industrial policy department of the Ministry of Industry.
