Ministry of Employment,’reins’ to reduce industrial accidents… Work site supervision in case of death

The Ministry of Employment and Labor has embarked on a’reinforcement’ to prevent serious accidents occurring at industrial sites ahead of the enforcement of the Act on the Punishment of Serious Accidents, etc. next year. This is the first time the government has announced a comprehensive plan for overseeing occupational safety and health, and is actively engaged in supervision at work sites where a fatal accident occurred.

The Ministry of Employment announced on the 9th that “Hyundai Heavy Industries, which has repeatedly suffered death accidents following the last year, is conducting intensive supervision from the 8th.” The reason for the intensive supervision is that there was an accident in which a worker died on the 5th, even though the same company conducted special supervision due to four major accidents last year. The Ministry of Employment said on the 8th that it is considering special labor supervision for the POSCO Pohang Works, where the death accident occurred.

The reason why the Ministry of Employment and Employment is actively supervising industrial sites is because it has set a strong goal to reduce industrial accident deaths by 20% ahead of the implementation of the Severe Accident Act next year. In particular, even this goal, which is about 700 people a year, does not reach the 500 people that President Moon Jae-in made as a pledge. It also shows the government’s willingness to reduce industrial accidents and deaths by presenting a plan to supervise occupational safety on this day. This plan contains strong details, such as when a serious disaster such as a worker’s death accident occurs at a construction site, not only the workplace but also the headquarters of the construction company will be subject to safety supervision. The government has decided to simultaneously supervise more than 60% of construction sites across the country under the jurisdiction of the headquarters of the construction company and the headquarters of the construction company when a major disaster occurs repeatedly at the construction site.
