The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that Minister Sung Yun-mo will visit the Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant site in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do on the morning of the 8th.

On this day, Minister Seong’s visit to the site was the first hydrogen economy-related event in Yiwu, where the government enforced the hydrogen law on the 5th.

The Ministry of Industry explained that this is a place to visit the fuel cell power plant, which is a major pillar of the use of hydrogen energy, to check the status of safety management, and to encourage the hard work of employees who are striving to supply and supply electricity in winter.

The Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant is the world’s first commercial power plant using by-product hydrogen as an energy source. Co-founded by Hanwha Energy, Korea East-West Power, and Doosan Fuel Cell, the power plant went into full-scale operation in June.

The power plant is currently stably supplying 400,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity that can be used by 160,000 households per year to nearby areas.

Unlike the previous method of using hydrogen extracted from liquefied natural gas (LNG), this power plant directly utilizes by-product hydrogen generated as a by-product in the process of a nearby petrochemical plant as an energy source. There is no carbon dioxide produced in this process.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Currently, it has a high operating rate of 97% on average,” and said, “To date, it is safely operated in all processes such as’hydrogen production-transport-use’ without a single safety accident such as hydrogen leakage.

He added, “This power plant is also supplying clean air that can breathe for about 350,000 adults by purifying ultrafine dust in the air through a fine filter installed on the generator.”

According to the Ministry of Industry, the domestic fuel cell supply is about 600MW by the end of last year. This accounts for 43% of global supply.

The government plans to supply 15 gigawatts of fuel cells for power generation (GW, cumulative domestic demand 8GW) by 2040 to foster it as an export industry along with domestic eco-friendly energy supply. To support this, the introduction of the mandatory hydrogen power generation system is being promoted, and related system reform is also being prepared.

Minister Sung Yun-mo said, “The world’s first implementation of the hydrogen law has laid the foundation for a full-fledged hydrogen economy,” and emphasized that “Hydrogen fuel cells, an eco-friendly power plant, will lead carbon neutrality in Korea in the future.”

He added, “We will not spare any interest and support so that we can continue to maintain the world’s No. 1 position in the hydrogen fuel cell power generation market,” he said.
