Min Byung-hun, the main outfielder of the Lotte Giants, receives brain surgery. Lotte Club announced on the 18th that Min Byung-hun will undergo a cerebral aneurysm surgery at Seoul National University Hospital on the 22nd.

Cerebral aneurysm refers to a disease in which blood vessels swell as part of the walls of cerebrovascular vessels weaken. A cerebral aneurysm gradually swells and causes cerebral bleeding, which is called a’time bomb in the brain’ because it can cause life-threatening or serious sequelae.

Cerebral aneurysm, the worst sluggish last year

Lotte’s change inevitable in the long-term gap

Min Byung-hun found a cerebral aneurysm while visiting a hospital with a headache in 2019. Afterwards, he continued to follow up through regular checkups at Seoul National University Hospital. According to the hospital’s opinion that surgery is necessary as a result of the recent checkup, he is placed on the operating table.

As a result, Min Byung-hun, who hit 30% for seven consecutive years, was known to be caused by a cerebral aneurysm as well, with a batting average of 0.233 last year. Min Byeong-hun signed a contract with Lotte for up to 8 billion won for three years in 2017 based on the record of showing more than 30% batting average for five consecutive years at Doosan Bears. In July of last year, Min Byeong-hun made a voluntary request to coach Heo Moon-hoe that he wanted to go down to the second army, but he was held back by him. This is also attributed to a cerebral aneurysm.

Min Byung-hun has not announced this fact so far, but said that he decided to disclose it because he was not able to attend Spring Camp for the first time since his professional debut this year.

Meanwhile, the composition of Lotte’s squad this season is expected to change due to the long-term hiatus of Min Byeong-hun, the main axis of the team. In hitting, we look forward to the resurgence of Lee Dae-ho, who signed a second free contract with Lotte. In addition, the centers of the team, Son A-seop and Jeon Jun-woo, and the next-generation giant Han Dong-hee, have heavy shoulders. The defense is expected to return to the 2nd Army’s Kang Rohan, Choo Jae-hyun and Choi Min-jae, and Na Seung-yeop, who is considering a position change.

The contract with Min Byung-hun, which is the end of this year, is also subject to change if the gap lengthens. If he does not get re-qualification for FA because he cannot meet the number of matches, he can play for Lotte until 2022.

Min Byung-hun said, “Before discussing the FA contract, a healthy return is our top priority,” and said, “I will do my best to return as quickly as possible following the guidelines of the hospital.”
