FC Barcelona (Spain), where Lionel Messi missed the penalty kick, failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the European Football Federation (UEFA) Champions League (UCL).

Barcelona drew 1-1 in the 2nd leg of the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG, France) held at Parc des Princes in Paris, France on the 11th. In the first game played at home, he lost a big 1 to 4 and then aimed for a reversal, but a draw was recorded in the away, and his head dropped to a total of 2 to 5 in the first and second games.

For the first time since the 2006-2007 season, Barcelona’s quarter-finals were frustrated, and the record for 13 consecutive seasons stopped.

Barcelona needed three or more wins on the day to make up for a loss in the first leg, but Messi’s penalty kick was blocked by PSG goalkeeper Keyler Navas’ save in the first half of the extra time. This is the first time Messi has missed a chance to score a penalty in the Champions League since the February 2015 match against Manchester City (England).

In the match that day, PSG Killian Mbappe scored the 6th goal in the UCL this season, scoring a penalty without a mistake. Mbafe, who scored 25 goals in UCL’s career, achieved this at the age of 22 and 80, breaking the record for 25 goals in UCL, the youngest ever recorded by Messi (22 years and 286 days).

The day before, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team Juventus (Italy) also knelt in Porto (Portugal), and Messi and Ronaldo experienced an early dropout.

This is the first time since the 2004-2005 season that the UCL quarterfinals will be played with both Messi and Ronaldo missing.
