Medvedev, second in men’s tennis world, wins the Open 13 Provence


Danil Medvedev (25, Russia) was excited by winning the tour competition one day ahead of the leap to the second place in the men’s professional tennis (ATP) singles world rankings.

Medvedev, ranked 3rd in the world ranking, won Pierrewig Erber (93rd, France) 2-1 in the singles finals on the last day of the ATP Tour Open13 Provence (total prize money 53,490 euros) held in Marseille, France on the morning of the 15th (Korean time). 6-4, 6-7, 6-4). Medvedev, who won runner-up at the Australian Open at the major tournament last month, won the 10th personal tour singles championship in four months since the ATP Finals in November last year. The prize money to win this competition is 27,615 euros (about 37 million won).

Last week, Medvedev was confirmed to rise to second place in the world rankings. Rafael Nadal (Spain), currently second in the world rankings that is newly updated on this day, will go down to third, and Medvedev will be second.

Players other than Novak Djokovic (1st place, Serbia), who reigned as’Big 4’in men’s tennis recently, and Nadal, Roger Federer (6th place, Switzerland), and Andy Murray (116th place, UK), rose to second place in the singles world rankings. It has been 5 years and 8 months since Leighton Hewitt (Australia) in July 2005.

Medvedev said, “It’s always fun to climb up the rankings through good results,” he said. “Especially, it is more meaningful to win the championship as it became the second in the world ranking this time.”

Medvedev, born in 1996, is the best in major competitions in the 2019 US Open and this year’s Australian Open.
