Controversy is arising when Lyon, France, has decided to offer a single menu without meat from the school diet.

Mayor Gregory Dusse of Lyon, a member of the European Environmental Green Party (EELV), announced that he will exclude meat from meals starting on the 22nd (local time) after winter break. He explained that in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), the menu has to be unified because students need to reduce the time they spend in restaurants. He then stressed that considering the case of hypersensitivity to certain foods or allergies, a diet without meat was the most appropriate option.

There are accusations that the city of Lyon should not impose political convictions on students in such a decision. Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Julien De Normandy posted on Twitter the day before that we should not try to put our ideology in the rice bowls of children growing up. “We have to give our children what they need to grow properly, and meat is one of them,” said De Normandy. Interior Minister Gerald Dharmanin also pointed out that the morality and elitism pursued by the Green Party exclude the public, saying that the French livestock industry is “an unacceptable insult” over Lyon’s decision. Government spokesman Gabriel Atal also insisted that the city of Lyon should not make policy decisions based on ideology and that “students should have a choice.”

Livestock farmers are also strongly opposed to this decision made in Lyon, a’Gourmet City’ that attracts tourists with food made with various ingredients including meat. Livestock farmers from the French Rhône Regional Federation of Farmers (FDSEA) and the Association of Young Farmers (JA) held a protest in front of the city hall of Lyon.
