LOTTE’s proud pitching lab, ‘Inflicts science on nurturing’, is first released

(Busan = Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Chang-yong = “We are proud to have better facilities and infrastructure than the United States.”

This is a statement by Park Hyun-woo, the head of professional baseball Lotte Giants, after the first public release of the pitching lab on the 4th floor of the Busan Sajik Stadium on the 16th.

Lotte has been working hard to nurture players since General Manager Seong Min-gyu took office in September 2019. The plan is to lay the groundwork for long-term success rather than immediate results.

At the peak is the pitching wrap. Lotte opened a pitching lab last year, spending about 200 million won to prevent injuries and measure athletic performance necessary for improving athletic performance.

Lotte is the only one that has a pitching lab out of 10 domestic clubs.

Park explained that even in the major leagues that boast state-of-the-art facilities, less than half of the clubs with pitching labs.

On the first day of the release, Lotte’s large left-handed rookie Kim Jin-wook pitched in the pitching lab.

For accurate measurement, Kim Jin-wook attached 25 to 30 sensors to his bare body and threw the ball in the wind of his underwear.

Several cameras surrounding the ceiling with squares captured Kim Jin-wook’s pitching motion in three dimensions.

Through this, data such as the distance between each body part when Kim Jin-wook throws, the angle of each joint, and the angular acceleration are derived.

Jinwook Kim is an extreme overhand pitcher. It literally puts the ball from top to bottom. It is a pitching form that is not recommended by leaders because of the risk of injury.

Kim Jin-wook also said, “I have heard a lot from childhood that there is a risk of injury if you throw your arm high.”

The results of Pitching Lab’s analysis were different.

Park said, “I measured Kim Jin-wook in today’s pitching lap, and there is a part that was surprised in the R&D team and development part.” “He throws with a peculiar overhand but has a higher speed than other pitchers. It can be seen as a player who has the power to achieve that speed.”

If the body is a pitching form that cannot withstand it, it is concluded that there is no need to modify it to prevent injury.

Park said, “Kim Jin-wook’s fastball rotates from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock. Players who rotate the ball straight like this give the ball a feeling of rising and heavy feeling even at the same speed.” In addition, more than 2,300 rotations are taken,” he emphasized.

Through these results, Kim Jin-wook became more confident in his pitching form and pitch.

Based on the data measured by the pitching lab, Lotte discusses with the coach, R&D team, and sports science team to find a direction for fostering that can maximize each player’s performance.

Then, every three months, it is measured with a pitching lap to check whether the athlete is properly implementing the training method suggested by the club.

If the Rhapsodo and Track Mac, familiar to baseball fans, are instruments that measure the outcome of a ball leaving a pitcher’s hand, Pitching Lab offers a way to improve the outcome.

Pitching labs seem to be applicable only to pitchers, but this biomechanical analysis system applies to both batters and catchers.

General Park said, “After the end of last season, I had a two-hour meeting with the players in the second group.” He introduced that he received a lot of feedback saying,’I know if it was,’ or’I know clearly what to prepare for the offseason.’

In addition, Lotte introduced the US driveline training method to the Sangdong 2nd Army camp.

Driveline, located in Seattle, USA, is famous for collecting body dynamics data and providing programs tailored to athletes.

Ahead of last season, Lotte dispatched four young Guns, including Yoon Sung-bin and Lee Seung-heon, and became widely known in the KBO League.

This year, there is no need to send players to the United States, even if it is not because of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

This is because he has been training in Driveline for more than 5 years, and he hired Brandon Mann Pitching Coordinator who completed the driveline pitch design course and transplanted the driveline system altogether.

Kim Jin-wook said, “The man coordinator will teach you how to train the driveline and show you the movements in detail.” “He said.

He said, “It’s definitely good because I get to know it systematically, unlike in my amateur days, which I only did with persimmon. I’m looking forward to myself. I think this season will be fun.”

Lotte’s investment in scientific development is because this is the surest way to win, even if it takes time.

General Park said, “Even if you have good facilities and good training methods, it does not mean anything if you do not achieve good results in the first group. I think that is the ultimate achievement.” That will be the only achievement.
