Lotte Group acquires Used Nara and enters the domestic used goods trading market. It is a method of investing a stake in a consortium where Eugene Asset Management, NH Investment & Securities and Opus PE participated through Lotte Shopping. A total of 100 billion won was invested in acquiring a 93.9% stake, of which Lotte Shopping’s investment amounted to about 20 to 30 billion won.

Used Nara is a company that started as Naver Cafe and has grown into the largest used trading platform in Korea. The number of cafe members alone reaches 23.3 million.

Second-hand countries have not been mentioned as a major e-commerce market for sale. This is because the weight class was lower than that of open market companies such as Timon and eBay Korea. Accordingly, Lotte’s decision is somewhat unexpected.

Why did Lotte Shopping acquire a stake in Used Nara? It is interpreted to be in order not to fall behind the urgent competition in the e-commerce market. The domestic used market has grown from 4 trillion won in 2008 to 20 trillion won last year.

Of course, the investment scale of Lotte Shopping is only 30 billion won, so it is difficult to give a big meaning to the market change. However, it is meaningful in that Lotte Shopping, which had shrunk since 2014, moved after 7 years, and there is room for it to be viewed as a’outpost’ of M&A work that will be carried out in the future.

Lotte Shopping’s greatest interest is eBay Korea. Together with Shinsegae, they entered the battle to take over eBay Korea, which costs about 5 trillion won in ransom, and although it is still in the preliminary bidding stage, it is said that both inside and outside the group are willing to take over.

Lotte Shopping Vice Chairman Kang Hee-tae also said at the Lotte Shopping’s general shareholders’ meeting held on the 23rd that he has “sufficient interest in the acquisition of eBay Korea.”

Recently, Lotte is also showing an active appearance in the M&A market, such as reviewing entry into the bio business at the group level. Lotte Shopping conducted a major restructuring under the leadership of Chairman Shin Dong-bin last year to improve its constitution.
