Racial remarks such as “like gay” and “like mixed blood” were mistranslated as “handsome.” Amidst Asian hatred becoming a global buzzword, sparks sprang up until tvN’Yoon’s Restaurant’ Season 2 (hereinafter’Yoon’s Restaurant 2′), which was mistranslated three years ago.
TVN’Yunsikdang 2′, which aired in 2018, was broadcast with the concept of running a Korean restaurant in Garachico, Tenerife Island, Spain. Garachico is a representative resort called’European Hawaii’, and due to the nature of the filming location, most of the guests who appeared in’Yunsikdang 2’were white people from Europe.
The problem is that the racist remarks made by customers in’Yoonsikdang 2′, such as “like gay” and “like mixed blood,” are mistranslated as “handsome.” Moreover, the scene was produced as a clip and released on YouTube, and points of mistranslation have continued until recently, centering on international students and Koreans fluent in the local language.
A netizen who identified himself as an international student in Germany said, “How can’there are gay Korean men here’ translate to’there are handsome Korean men’.” He pointed out the problem, saying, “It’s sneaky, it’s not humor. It’s okay to do it.”
Another international student said, “I told Lee Seo-jin that he was gay,” and said, “I didn’t say he was handsome. He was a bad guy.”
One netizen said, “It is a racist remark to ask “Is it mixed race” in Europe,” and said, “It reveals the perception that Asians are ugly.” . At the same time, he lamented, “I know how much discrimination against Asians is going to be like that even though I know that it’s being broadcast.”
Recently, the problem of Asian hatred has risen around the world, and voices are growing that we must stop hate crimes. In this situation, when controversy over the mistranslation of’Yunsikdang 2’arose, the production team deleted the video. However, it did not provide any stance or clarification on the broadcast.
