Chae Hyun-guk, the chairman of Hyoam Academy and the director of the Institute of Ethnic Aesthetics, passed away on the 2nd. Age 86.

Chae succeeded as a mining company by operating the Heungkuk Coal Mine in Samcheong Dogye, Gangwon-do, which was run by his father, but after the Yushin administration took over in October 1972, he gave up his business and distributed his assets to the surrounding area. It provided shelter to those who lived in refuge during the democratization movement, and bought houses for reporters who were dismissed from rent. In 1988, he was inaugurated as the chairman of Hyoam Academy in Yangsan, which has Hyoam High School and Gaeun Middle School, and has been working unpaid. He has lived upright without being swayed by money, fame, and power, and has established himself as a’adult of the era’ when he said in a press interview in 2014 that “Let’s watch the old people look like that”. The mortuary was prepared at Seoul National University Hospital, and the deceased is at 9 o’clock on the morning of the 5th.
