LG Display is attracting attention at CES 2021 as a new transparent OLED TV, IT media The Verge reported on the 11th (local time).

The product that LG Display introduced this time is a 55-inch OLED TV, but you can see behind the panel by choosing a transparent design. The transparency of this transparent screen is 40%, which is an improvement over the transparent liquid crystal display (LCD) with about 10% transparency in the past, the company explained.

The transparent OLED TV mounted on the smart bed is hidden when not in use, and you can check the current time or weather by raising some OLED screens, and you can view TV or movies by raising the full screen.

The currently designed panel is known to have built-in speakers, but it’s not clear what audio functions are supported, The Verge said. The company said in an email that its’sound solution technology is “embedded in the frame.”

LG Display is considering applying transparent display products to smart home devices and public places such as restaurants and public transportation in the future. On one side of the exhibition hall, a transparent screen applied to the glass windows of the subway cabin was placed, allowing various information such as subway route maps to be obtained while viewing the outside scenery.

Jong-sun Park, managing director of LG Display’s commercial business, said, “Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED, and can be used in various places in everyday life, from stores, shopping malls, architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subways, and aircraft.” “It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm.”

LG Electronics announced last month that it plans to introduce a transparent OLED automatic door with Asa Abloi, a Swedish automatic door specialist. LG added that it has begun developing transparent OLED sliding doors for office buildings and commercial spaces. However, the product developed this time is LG Display’s first transparent OLED screen developed as a home TV.

Of course, this is not the first time a transparent display has been introduced. In 20115, Samsung Electronics also unveiled a transparent OLED screen, and in 2016 Panasonic also introduced a transparent display prototype.
