“This year will be the tipping point of OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) (the point of explosive popularity).”

“The OLED panel has been technologically upgraded and the shape and use of the OLED have been diversified,” said Yoon Soo-young, the chief technology officer of LG Display, who met at LG Science Park in Magok-dong, Seoul on the 11th. LG Display set up an offline exhibition hall for the world’s largest IT and home appliance exhibition’CES 2021′ here this year. In the aftermath of Corona 19, CES was held online, and after installing the real thing in a place other than the United States, they chose a method to shoot a video and upload it to a virtual exhibition hall.

LG Display unveiled a 77-inch next-generation OLED TV panel on this day. OLED panels are manufactured by depositing organic light emitting devices in several layers on a substrate. LG Display newly developed an organic light emitting device with a high-efficiency material. It is explained that the luminous efficiency is improved by about 20% compared to the previous one, so that even when the same signal comes in, it can be expressed brighter, resulting in clearer image quality.

The size has also increased. From this year, 83-inch and 42-inch OLED panels will also be released. 83-inch panels were produced in a’MMG’ method that produces panels of different sizes on one substrate, saving cost. The 42-inch panel, which is expected to demand gaming, is manufactured in a ledger mode that produces only one model per substrate. Medium-sized panels in the 20-30 inch range will also be introduced.

CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) technology that uses vibration to make sound on the screen was also introduced. Based on an 88-inch panel, there are 2 speaker zones at the top and 3 speaker zones at the bottom, so sound comes from each location. If a firecracker goes off at the top right of the video, it makes a sound at that location. When released as a finished TV, the company predicted that the price would be set at around $30,000 (about 32.9 million won) for 88 inches.

In the exhibition space decorated like a sushi bar, a transparent OLED screen was installed in front of the table. After using the screen as a menu board, you can enjoy video content while waiting for an order. The 48-inch bendable OLED TV also attracted attention. When you press the button, the screen automatically bends according to the curvature. LG Display predicts that this year’s OLED TV panel shipments will increase to 7 to 8 million units.

Meanwhile, LG Display is known to have recently supplied a plastic organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) panel to Mercedes. The product will be installed on the’MBUX Hyper Screen’, the infotainment system of the large electric vehicle’EQS’ coming out at the end of this year.
