LG Display announced on the 23rd that it will enter the medical X-ray imaging market by developing the world’s first large-area digital X-ray detector (DXD) oxide TFT.

The TFT for DXD (Digital X-ray Detector) is a core part of DXD that takes the role of converting X-ray results into digital files and transmitting them to a PC. Demand is increasing rapidly in recent years due to the increase in X-rays for diagnosis of Corona 19 and the progression and severity of the disease.

Existing DXD TFTs use amorphous silicon (a-Si) and are susceptible to noise, so there is a limitation in that it is difficult to implement high-definition images for accurate disease diagnosis. In addition, it was difficult to use for surgical X-ray devices that require high-speed video recording due to slow electron mobility.

The large-area (43×43cm, 35×43cm) medical oxide TFT, which LG Display succeeded in developing for the first time in the world, has 100 times faster electron mobility and 10 times lower noise characteristics than the existing a-Si TFT. It is characterized by implementing high-speed video.

LG Display evaluated it as the optimal DXD TFT that can be used not only for diagnosis but also for surgery.

It is also an advantage that LG Display’s DXD TFT can exhibit excellent performance even in mobile and portable X-rays with low-power specifications that are frequently used outside such as Corona 19 screening clinics. The amount of radiation exposure has also been reduced by more than 50% compared to the previous year, minimizing the concern of overexposure to X-ray radiation, a recent issue.

LG Display is planning to actively target the high value-added medical X-ray image market by supplying the DXD oxide TFT to Daltech, one of the leading global DXD companies, and then signing supply contracts with various global DXD companies.

LG Display said, “We have selected the high value-added medical imaging business as a future growth business, and are concentrating our capabilities on developing and fostering differentiated products.” The used TFT market for digital X-ray detectors will grow rapidly.”

Meanwhile, according to the global market research institute Omdia, the medical DXD market is expected to grow by 30% from $1.95 billion last year to $2.53 billion in 2024.

☞ Terminology: Oxide TFT

Oxide TFT (Oxide Thin Film Transistor) refers to a thin film transistor made of a new material called IGZO, an oxide of indium (In), gallium (Ga), and zinc (Zn). This has the advantage of being driven quickly with low power due to high electron mobility compared to a-Si TFTs used in general LCD panels.
