At CES 2021, the world’s largest electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition, domestic and foreign automakers are planning to showcase their differentiated technologies.

GM, an American automaker, plans to announce aggressive EV conversion plans, and Magna, a Canadian auto parts maker that establishes a joint venture with LG Electronics, plans to present the present and future of the electric vehicle parts business. In Korea, Mando and GS Caltex participated in this CES 2021 for the first time and introduced the’Free Mounted Advanced Driving System (SbW)’,’Drone Delivery’ and’Future Gas Station’. However, Hyundai does not participate. In addition, startups will introduce the latest technologies such as solar electric vehicles and autonomous mining technologies.

The most attention-grabbing in the automotive sector of this CES 2021 is the keynote speech from GM CEO Mary Bara on the 12th. CEO Bara will speak on the theme of’The Future of All Electric Vehicles’ and will present the strategies for electrification of various brands within GM. There is a possibility that GM’s electric concept cars, including Chevrolet’s electric pickup truck, will be revealed by surprise. In addition to this, GM plans to hold a meeting to introduce specific electric vehicle strategies and’ultium’ battery technology jointly developed with LG Energy Solutions through a separate session. GM, which has been somewhat lukewarm about the conversion of electric vehicles, is focusing on planting the image of a leading electric vehicle company through this CES 2021.

Mercedes-Benz, which introduced the future concept car’Vision Avatar’ last year, is planning to unveil the MBUX hyperscreen concept based on artificial intelligence (AI) this year. The hyperscreen is a screen mounted on the dashboard inside a vehicle and refers to a technology that provides various information or services by recognizing the user’s voice. Magna, which is promoting the establishment of a joint venture with LG Electronics, will also participate in CES 2021 and introduce the future electrification business in detail through a corner called’Magna Live’. Bosch, the world’s number one auto parts company, and Bridgestone, a tire maker, are also planning to attend CES 2021 to discuss the possibility of developing an in-vehicle infotainment system.

In Korea, Mando and GS Caltex will be listed as a company participating in CES 2021 for the first time this year. Mando’s SbW is a technology that freely attaches the steering wheel to the inside of the car and is regarded as the core technology of future cars. At CES 2021, GS Caltex will present a future gas station that will be used as a base for various mobility and logistics, such as drone long-distance operation technology that can deliver between islands and land, charging electric and hydrogen vehicles, car sharing, micro mobility, and drone delivery.

The latest technology trends related to future vehicles are also introduced. Representative examples include Sono Motors, which develops a solar cell vehicle, a future car that does not use fossil fuels, and autonomous mining of coal mines based on autonomous driving technology.

A field to discuss related policies is also unfolding ahead of the era of autonomous driving, which will become full-scale within a few years. At the conference held under the title’Development of self-driving cars: Who will decide the rules’, officials such as Toyota Motor Company, the US Department of Transportation, and Waymo, an autonomous driving company, are planning to discuss the enactment of laws related to autonomous driving.
