LG Innotek signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with MS for cooperation in developing and supplying ToF (Time of Flight) module, a 3D sensing component for Ezer Cloud.
The ToF module is a key component of a 3D sensing camera, and it recognizes the three-dimensional effect of objects, spatial information, and movement by measuring the distance by the time the light emitted toward the subject bounces back.
When this module is mounted on a smartphone or a wearable (wearable) device, biometric authentication, motion recognition, augmented (AR) and virtual (VR) reality functions can be implemented.
Edger Cloud is a cloud service operated by Microsoft. It occupied the second place in the global market last year and is growing rapidly, and major global companies such as Walt Disney, AT&T, SAP, and Walgreen use this service.

With this agreement, LG Innotek will develop ToF modules for the Edger cloud platform based on its 3D sensing technology. It aims for mass production in the second half of this year.
In addition, it will be possible to supply this module to various Azure Cloud customers through Microsoft.
Microsoft provides its own 3D sensing technology and supports LG Innotek with a collaboration system (Azure ecosystem) consisting of hardware/software companies, system integrators, and customers required for new service development.
In addition, LG Innotek and Microsoft actively cooperate in finding customers. The two companies plan to carry out joint activities to secure new customers in various fields such as fitness and healthcare.
LG Innotek reported that this agreement was first proposed by Microsoft to accelerate the spread of Edger Cloud.

Microsoft has been actively seeking 3D sensing module partners to strengthen the service model that combines 3D cameras and cloud platforms.
LG Innotek explained, “Microsoft highly appreciated our innovative technology and quality, which have been leading the smartphone camera and 3D sensing module market for many years.”
Through this agreement, the two companies are expected to be able to rapidly spread the 3D sensing camera-based cloud service to the fields of fitness, healthcare, distribution, logistics, and manufacturing.
