Last year, in the electric vehicle battery market excluding China, three domestic companies (LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation) maintained the top 4 market share.
China’s CATL, which has been reliant on domestic demand for electric vehicles, has also risen to No. 5, and is actively pursuing domestic companies in markets outside of China.
According to SNE Research, a market research firm on the 17th, LG Energy Solutions recorded 26.8 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electric vehicle battery usage in markets outside of China last year, surpassing Panasonic in Japan and ranking first. Compared to the previous year, the growth rate was 117.7%, and the market share rose from 23.7% to 33.1%.
LG Energy Solutions’ growth was mainly driven by the rapid increase in sales of Renault’Joe’, Volkswagen’ID.3′, and Porsche’Taikan EV’.
Panasonic, which ranked first in the previous year, recorded 25.6 GWh, a mere 1.5% growth. The market share from 48.6% also decreased to 31.6%.
Following this, Samsung SDI recorded 8.2GWh, an increase of 89.1%, maintaining the same 3rd place as the previous year, and SK Innovation recorded 7.9GWh, an increase of 282.5%, ranking 4th annually.

Samsung SDI’s growth was driven by sales growth of Audi’E-tron EV’ and Ford’Kuga PHEV’. SK Innovation’s sales of Hyundai Motors’Kona Electric’ and Kia’s’Niro EV’ were effective.
China CATL took the fifth place. CATL’s battery usage is 5.3GWh, which is 2457.1% faster than the previous year (0.2GWh). The market share also increased significantly from 0.4% to 9.7%. It is evaluated that CATL, which was regarded as a company dedicated to the Chinese market, has emerged as an emerging powerhouse in markets outside of China.
CATL recorded the highest growth rate among major companies as the PSA Group’s electric vehicle sales volume surged, such as Peugeot’e-208′,’e-2008′ and Opel’Corsa’.
Meanwhile, the amount of electric vehicle battery energy registered in non-Chinese markets last year was 81.2 GWh, an increase of 56.2% from the previous year. In December of the same year, battery usage was 15.3GWh, up 122.5% from the same month last year.
