According to LG Electronics on the 9th, it was tentatively compiled on the 8th that LG Electronics achieved annual sales of 63,2638 billion won and operating profit of 3,191.8 billion won last year. Sales and operating profits are the highest, respectively, up 1.5% and 31% compared to 2019. In particular, this is the first time that annual operating profit has exceeded 3 trillion won. In addition, sales and operating profit in the fourth quarter of last year were 18,782.6 billion won and 647 billion won, respectively. 4Q sales and operating profit also increased 16.9% and 535.6% in the same period of the previous year, respectively.
Due to the new coronavirus infectious disease (Corona 19) pandemic (a global pandemic), the market seemed to freeze as countries around the world took blockades. H&A) and TV sales recovered rapidly. In particular, sales of premium new home appliances and sanitary home appliances such as stylers (clothing dryers), dryers and washing machines, and dishwashers continued to be strong. Accordingly, the industry is paying attention to whether it can surpass Whirlpool’s performance. LG Electronics’ H&A division’s operating profit has surpassed Whirlpool since 2017 and continues to be the number one in the world, but 2019 was the first to reach the top in terms of sales. Following 2019 at LG Electronics’ H&A business headquarters, sales in the first and second quarters of last year were ahead of Whirlpool. On the other hand, the demand for home appliances such as Black Friday in the U.S. rose, and Whirlpool was favorable for sales in the third and fourth quarters of 2019.
However, LG Electronics, which secured various production bases due to Corona 19 this year, had accumulated sales of 16,7289 billion won in the household appliance sector until the third quarter of last year, more than 500 billion won more than Whirlpool equipped with a North American intensive production line. The operating profit of LG Electronics (2.53 trillion won) is more than double that of Whirlpool (about 980 billion won).
Some are forecasting that LG Electronics and Whirlpool’s sales may be flat. This is because Whirlpool sales in the fourth quarter also increased significantly compared to the previous quarter due to the influence of’Black Friday’, which is the largest shopping event of the year in the US. In addition, the influence of the exchange rate can be beneficial for Whirlpool’s 4Q earnings.
Meanwhile, Whirlpool’s fourth quarter earnings are expected to come out in the middle of this month.
