LG Electronics newly introduced the premium LCD TV’LG QNED’ to which mini LED technology is applied. LG QNED TV is located between the existing LG OLED TV and LG Nanocell TV lineup.
On the 29th, LG Electronics held an online technology briefing session with HE Research Center Director Nam Ho-joon and TV Product Planning Manager Paik Sun-pil, and released LG QNED.
LG Electronics applied a mini LED that is less than 1/10 the size of the light source compared to the existing LCD TV to the LG QNED TV backlight.
As the LED size decreases, more light sources can be placed in the same area. A brighter screen can be implemented and the screen division drive (local dimming) area can be subdivided, which increases the contrast ratio, one of the disadvantages of LCD TVs.
LG QNED is equipped with about 30,000 mini LEDs based on 86-inch 8K resolution. There are about 2,500 local dimming areas.
This product is characterized by raising the color expression of LCD TV to the highest level by using all of the high color reproduction technologies used in the industry. If the existing color reproduction rate was 70%, a new product could express 90%.
The new product applied’Quantum Nano Cell Color Technology’, a new technology that simultaneously utilizes nanocell and quantum dot-based technologies. The light emitted from the backlight passes through the nanocells and quantum dot materials to express the true color closer to the real world.
Ho-jun Nam, head of LG Electronics’ HE Research Center, emphasized, “We will make it possible to experience the peak of the technological evolution of LCD TVs, which are closest to OLED TVs where each pixel emits its own light.”
LG Electronics is planning to showcase major products of LG QNED TV at CES 2021 next month. It plans to sell more than 10 models, including 8K and 4K resolutions, mainly for ultra-large products in the global market.
It is expected that QNED TV will have more price competitiveness than existing OLED TVs. The company explained that the price will be less than half of that of OLED TV based on 8K TV.

It is also pointed out that QNED will absorb the existing OLED TV demand with price competitiveness. However, LG Electronics predicted that sales interference between OLED TVs and QNED TVs will not occur.
“It is clear that only All-red has advantages,” said Sun-pil Paik, managing director of LG Electronics’ TV product planning. “I think that All-red’s customer base exists as OLED itself.” He added, “QNED will be able to create a new market compared to existing LCD TVs.”
