(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jae-young Cho = The government has decided to suspend the operation of 19 to 28 coal power plants for one month in March to reduce fine dust in the spring.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 25th that it plans to reduce fine dust emissions as much as possible by shutting down some of the coal power plants in spring following winter in accordance with the’Fine Dust Seasonal Management System Implementation Plan’.
Of the 58 total coal generators, 19 to 28 will be shut down, and an upper limit will be enforced to limit the power generation output to 80% for a maximum of 37 units. It is to expand up to 11 periods compared to the shutdown in winter (9-17).
The government plans to shut down 26 to 28 units on weekends when electricity demand is low and 19 to 21 units on weekdays.
However, considering the power supply and demand, maintenance schedule, etc., in the event of a special reason, the plan is to flexibly adjust the coal power reduction plan.
As a result of promoting the reduction of coal power generation in winter, the Ministry of Industry said that from December last year to January this year, the amount of fine dust in the coal power generation sector decreased by about 23% (519 tons) compared to a year ago.
Compared to December 2018-January 2019, before the enforcement of the seasonal management system, fine dust emissions decreased by 54% (about 2,54 tons).
