The Samsung Scholarship Association, which was founded by the late Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died last year, was disbanded. It has been 19 years since it was established in 2002.

According to the industry on the 9th, the Samsung Scholarship Association recently decided to disband and notified its members. The Samsung Scholarship Association has not selected new scholarship students for the last time in 2015, when social controversy over the merger ratio between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries was raised. With the end of last year and the completion of the five-year doctoral course of the last scholarship student, the secretariat in charge of networking such as academic events for existing members will disappear.

The Samsung Scholarship Society is regarded as a core project that embodies Chairman Lee’s philosophy of’regarding talent. In 2002, Chairman Lee founded the current Samsung Scholarship Society, the Samsung Kunhee Scholarship Foundation, named after him. 2002 is a time when Chairman Lee’s theory of genius management that “one S-class talent feeds 100,000 people in the 21st century” made a wave in the industry. For the establishment of the scholarship, Chairman Lee contributed 80 billion won, and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was then managing director at the time, contributed about 70 billion won in private assets, and Samsung Electronics also contributed about 150 billion won.

Based on this, the Samsung Scholarship Association selected 100 international students at renowned universities and graduate schools each year, and continued to provide unprecedented support for tuition and living expenses at an amount of 50,000 dollars per person. From the first selection in 2002 to the 14th in 2015, it has applied for a total of 14 times to 1,400 talents.

It is evaluated that the Samsung Scholarship Association served as a gateway to fostering the best talent in Korea. Talents from the Samsung Scholarship are currently working at major universities, research institutes, and companies at home and abroad. Even after studying abroad, it is evaluated that it has contributed to the development of the domestic knowledge ecosystem by continuing exchanges across academic boundaries.
