Lee Jae-yong’s prison interview statement mentioned in `Samsung headquarters relocation` was fake

Recently, an article titled’Outdoor Special Interview’ by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, mainly online, is spreading. However, this is not true.

Samsung is making every effort to block the spread of false information, but the spread continues.

As a result of the confirmation by Maeil Economic Daily on the 24th, it was found that the contents of the interview were in error, and the existence of the interview itself was impossible.

According to the correctional authority of the Ministry of Justice on that day, the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do, where Vice-Chairman Lee is in prison, is a correctional facility in which Corona 19 “Stage 3 Distance” is applied, and general interviews are currently suspended. Interviews with lawyers are possible without any number and time limit, but face-to-face interviews are not conducted. Attorneys can also be interviewed only in a general interview room where the space between the inmate and the interviewee is physically blocked. Accordingly, it is impossible for the inmate and the lawyer to directly exchange documents through interviews. However, it is explained that it is possible to deliver documents through correctional staff. As a result, Vice Chairman Lee is currently only able to disclose documents or express messages to the outside through his attorney. In this regard, Samsung Electronics said, “As a result of the confirmation of the attorney, there is absolutely no such thing as an interview by Vice Chairman Lee.” Some say that it is impossible to establish a suspicion that Vice Chairman Lee intentionally distributed the interview.

The article is also different from the facts in terms of content. It is practically impossible to move the Samsung headquarters to a third country. This is because the articles of incorporation must be changed through a resolution at the general shareholders’ meeting in order to transfer the address of the head office of a stock company under commercial law. Since Vice Chairman Lee is not currently the registered director of any listed subsidiaries of Samsung Electronics including Samsung Electronics, he cannot decide to relocate the headquarters himself.

In addition, the interview contains a statement that “we will reimburse the 8 billion won recognized as bribery,” but as a result of confirmation, Vice Chairman Lee has already reimbursed all of the embezzlement amount in 2017, so there is no need for additional compensation.
