Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong has been running on-site management since the beginning of the year. On the 4th, he started working at a semiconductor factory in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do, and mentioned’win-win growth with partners’, and on the 6th, he visited the Samsung Research Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul and emphasized’preoccupation in the future and social role.’
According to Samsung Electronics on the 6th, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong held a meeting of the president’s team in the set (finished product) division at Samsung Research, located in Umyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, and checked the status of next-generation 6G communication technology and artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. The meeting was attended by major executives of the company, including Kim Hyun-seok, head of consumer electronics (CE), Ko Dong-jin, head of IT and mobile (IM), Choi Yun-ho, head of management support department, and Sebastian Seung, head of Samsung Research Research Institute.
Jaeyong Lee “Securing future technologies is a matter of survival”
Vice-Chairman Lee received reports on the progress of research on next-generation communication technology, the status of securing technology for servers, and application of AI technology to products. At this meeting, he said, “Securing future technology is a matter of survival.” “Let’s read change and preoccupy the future. Let’s focus solely on enhancing the company’s value and contributing to society.” He also said, “Let’s have a sense of responsibility tens of times and hundreds of times as a leading company.”
The reason that Vice Chairman Lee presided over the meeting at Samsung Research, the outpost of future growth business, can be interpreted as expressing his strong will to secure’food for the future’ in the post-corona era. Samsung Research is an outpost to research future technologies in the set (finished product) sector, such as Samsung Electronics’ CE and IM, and has a global AI center, a next-generation communication research center, and a software innovation center under its subsidiaries. Sebastian Seung, who has been leading Samsung Research since June last year, is a world-renowned scholar in the field of AI, a Ph.D. in physics at Harvard University and a professor at Princeton University’s Brain Science Research Institute and Computer Science Department.
Samsung Research, the outpost of Samsung’s future business
Previously, Vice Chairman Lee selected AI, 5G, bio, and electronic semiconductors as Samsung’s future growth projects in 2018, and announced plans to invest 180 trillion won and recruit 40,000 people. At that time, he showed special interest in AI by visiting Europe and North America as his first overseas business trip to exchange with global scholars in the field of AI, and to identify the latest trends. The recruitment of Professor Sebastian Seung as Director of Samsung Research was one of the steps to rapidly increase AI competitiveness.
Currently, Samsung Research is conducting research on smart phones, TVs, home appliances, and next-generation communication 6G core technologies that combine AI technology. 6G is a future communication technology that enables tera-class ultra-high transmission speed and ultra-low latency wireless communication. The industry expects that standardization of 6G technology will begin in 2025, commercialization will begin in 2028, and full-scale service will be achieved in 2030.
