‘Lee Hee-jin’s parents murdered,’ Kim Daun, sentenced to life imprisonment

Kim Daun, 36, who was accused of murdering the parents of Lee Hee-jin, 35, who was called’Cheongdam-dong stock-rich’, was sentenced to life imprisonment even at trial for destruction.

The 15th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Law (Director Hyu-ok Cho) sentenced him to life imprisonment on the 10th in the same manner as the first trial before repatriation on the 10th at a remand trial for Kim, who was charged with robbery murder and abandonment of the body.

Kim was handed over to trial in February 2019 on charges of murdering Lee’s parents along with three Chinese compatriots he had hired, and taking 500 million won in cash and a luxury foreign-made car.

It was investigated that he abandoned the bodies of the victims, put them in a refrigerator containing the bodies, and moved them to a warehouse in Pyeongtaek. There is also a charge of kidnapping Lee’s younger brother and attempting to take money and goods.

Kim was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first trial held in March last year as a public participation trial. However, in October of the same year, the appeal trial returned the case back to the first trial, saying, “There is a mistake in violating the procedure because the first trial court did not clearly confirm the intention of the public participation trial to Mr. Kim.”

He pointed out that the first trial court did not ask Kim for his wishes for the public participation trial, even though the case had been merged. According to the Act on People’s Participation in Criminal Trial, the court must confirm with the accused whether they wish to have a citizen’s participatory trial in each case.

After the destruction and repatriation, Mr. Kim expressed his wishes for a public participation trial, but the court did not allow it and proceeded with a general criminal case trial.

The Court of Destruction and Recall Judgment judged guilty of the prosecution against Kim, saying, “According to the evidence legally investigated by the court before repatriation, it is admitted that Mr. Kim directly murdered the victims and destroyed the body.”

The judge explained the reason for the sentence, saying, “Kim is denying the crime from the investigative agency to the court, and is transferring responsibility to his accomplices,” and “considered that the victims wanted strong punishment.”
