Coupang entered the online video service (OTT) market in earnest, challenging overseas OTT dinosaurs such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
If you sign up for Coupang Wow Membership (Rocket Wow), you can receive an unprecedented service from rocket delivery to video streaming for 2,900 won per month.
Coupang announced on the 24th that it will officially launch the online video streaming service’Coupang Play’. It is an OTT service that allows unlimited enjoyment of domestic and international video content such as movies and TV series, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, regardless of time and place.
Coupang Play can enjoy the service for free if you are an existing Coupang’Rocket Wow’ member. The company said that the’Coupang ecosystem’ was built that allows unlimited use from rocket delivery to OTT service only with a monthly membership fee of 2,900 won.
Rocket Wow members can select and watch content according to their taste in Coupang Play. It categorizes content into categories such as movies, popular domestic and foreign dramas, current affairs, animation, language studies, and entrance exam classes, providing a wide range of environments from movie appreciation to study. To this end, Coupang developed collaborative content with domestic educational companies such as YBM and Daekyo.
In particular, it is a strong point that you can create up to 5 profiles per Rocket WoW account. For example, if only one member subscribes to the WoW membership, a family of up to 5 members can use Coupang Play for an unlimited amount of 2900 won per month (580 won per person). It also supports a’safe PIN password’ function and a’kids mode’ for families with children and teenagers.
In addition, Coupang Play supports the’download’ function for most contents. You can watch videos downloaded in advance from airliners or campsites with poor internet connection.
It has also prepared’reader content’ that cannot be seen on other OTT services. The latest U.S. TV series’Your Honor’ starring Brian Cranston and the educational news content’CNN10′ can only be watched at Coupang Play.
It is also easy to use. If you download the’Coupang Play’ application from the mobile app store and link it with the Coupang app, you can use the service immediately without registering as a separate member. Currently, only the official app for the Android version has been released, and iOS, tablet PC, smart TV, and PC versions will be released in sequence.
Earlier, Coupang applied for a trademark patent for’Coupang Play’ to the Korean Intellectual Property Office in October and put effort into entering the OTT business by conducting a closed test of the platform operation. It is an aspiration to leap beyond the existing e-commerce and food delivery business to a’comprehensive IT content platform’ that encompasses consumption, delivery, and entertainment. There is also an evaluation that it is the number of wins in a head-to-head confrontation with Amazon, the world’s number one e-commerce company.
